The harpsichord is a keyboard instrument that has a similar shape to the grand piano, but can be composed of one or two keyboards. It differs from the piano in that its sound is produced by pinching the strings.

The oldest reference to its origin dates back to the 14th century in Italy, when it was initially called clavicembalum. It was considered the most important and versatile keyboard instrument from the late 16th century to the early 19th century, after the organ. It was widely used in Europe both for the performance of solo keyboard music, as well as for chamber, orchestral and operatic music.
