The songs of sacred polyphony bring balance and peace to our souls in an undeniable way. The following piece of music is part of the repertoire of the great composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1524 – 1594).

Palestrina left a vast oeuvre, comprising 105 masses, more than 300 motets, 35 magnificats, a cycle of lamentations, 11 litanies, more than 70 hymns and 68 offertories. A group of additional pieces remain of uncertain authorship. His early output is largely indebted to the Franco-Flemish school, reflecting the teaching he received from masters of this school.

However, Palestrina’s compositional aesthetic gradually evolved to simplify polyphony. This did not result in a loss of technical sophistication, but rather an attempt to control the excessive musical ornamentation that characterized much of the Flemish generation. This aimed to make the text clearer and the musical textures more transparent, while at the same time highlighting specific meanings through musical resources.

The text in his work becomes so relevant that it often defines the entire structure of the composition. So, let’s listen to Pars Mea Dominus, for three voices.

In this video, you’ll hear one of the most famous works by the Italian composer Luigi Boccherini, the String Quintet Minuet in E Major, Op. 11, No. 5, G. 275. This piece was written in 1775 and is an example of the gallant and elegant style of musical classicism. The minuet is a dance of French origin, with a ternary rhythm and a graceful, refined character. Boccherini uses brief, well-defined motifs that repeat and contrast on different structural levels. The melody is simple and pleasant, with a discreet harmonic accompaniment. The minuet is divided into two main sections: the minuet itself and the trio, which introduces a new theme and a new tonality. After the trio, the minuet is repeated, forming an A-B-A structure. The pipe organ is the largest musical instrument. It has existed in its present form since the 14th century, although similar designs were common in the Eastern Mediterranean from the beginning of the Byzantine period. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart called the organ the "King of instruments".

The introduction of organs into the Catholic Church is traditionally attributed to Pope Vitalian in the 7th century. Due to its simultaneous ability to provide a musical foundation, the organ is ideal for accompanying human voices, whether a congregation, a choir, a cantor or a soloist.

The organ has occupied an important place in classical music, especially since the 16th century. Antonio de Cabezón from Spain, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck from Holland and Girolamo Frescobaldi from Italy were three of the most important organist-composers before 1650, along with leading members of this school including Buxtehude, Franz Tunder, Georg Böhm, Georg Philipp Telemann and, above all, Johann Sebastian Bach, whose contributions to organ music continue to reign supreme.
